Welcome

Welcome to the Jersey cattle breeding programme in Rwanda.

This cattle breeding programme is a joint venture between the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society and the Government of Rwanda with the aim of providing training in the technique of artificial insemination and cross breeding the indigenous Ankole cow (pictured above) to a pure bred Jersey bulls to improve milk yield.

The resultant first cross Jersey x Ankole (also pictured above) can produce 10 litres of milk per day as compared to the pure Ankole which produces 1 litre of milk per day.

The benefits of this programme are the provision of skills to the rural population in Rwanda and over time an increase in milk production which will lead to self sufficiency and the development of the dairy industry in that country.

The A.I. training is being undertaken by Andre Militis, sponsored by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission, and we hope you find this site of interest. If you would like to know more about our work please contact the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society through the following web site Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society

Rwanda March/April 2007

Two courses were run numbering 45 students in the south of the country around Butare. 38 of these trainees were successful. In total so far approximately 300 inseminators have been trained. As well as running the courses the opportunity was taken to do some follow-ups with previous candidates as well as seeing the progress of cows inseminated with Jersey semen.

The follow-ups proved to be quite difficult or rather time consuming as although Rwanda is quite small the terrain and roads makes for long journeys.
